Great read and what a pleasure it is to have Todd and Aimee as neighbors. I am really excited about the wines they are striving for and look forward to seeing their successes as someone so close to us.

It was also very flattering to see the comment about me. How much do I owe them for saying that? :)

I am jealous. It rained Sunday. Just kidding.

My favorite new release was the cab franc. I really love franc done well, and this one is well balanced.

My post with pics is rolling around here somewhere. I should retweet it on #vawine.

Had the 2010 Avenius chard tonight with roast chicken. Should have bought more. Accessible big white. If there is such a thing.

We also did major damage in the purchase department. That case of 2010 Hardscrabble cost what Cos D'Estournel did as a future.

Thanks for the update on Boxwood, guys! I've been watching them and enjoying their wines, especially since one of my favorite winemakers, Stephan Derenoncourt, is their winemaker consultant. Some exciting news to add to the mix- our own vineyard and winemaker intern from South Africa this past year, Andrew Smuts, will be leaving us shortly to take on a permanent position at Boxwood! We are very excited for him and look forward to what he will be able to both contribute to and learn from the great folks at Boxwood. Looking forward to more great years of wine to come!

Right now I don't seem to have enough time for fun. So your blog is a way for me to do it. It is almost like I am there with you - of course though I miss the wine in my mouth!!
Hi Paul and Richard, I am enjoying your website or blog and telling everyone about it! I even have it on the computer at Reynard Florence Winery. I wanted to let you know that we just got two new arrivals: Grenache (Blackberry infused nose is somewhat a ruse to the true character of this wine. The light strawberry dominated attack leads to a midpalate that showcases raspberry and black cherry. The viscose finish lingers on the rear of the palate with cherry overtones and a hint of tartness.), Merlot (Nose is filled with raspberry, cherry and a hint of leather. The fruit forward attack with licorice and red cherry leads to an expansive midpalate with silky layers of stone fruits and subtle tanins. The finish is exceedingly clean and memorable with strawberry notes.) It would be wonderful if you could return sometime to meet Dee and Roe Allison and try our two new gems. If you are unable to come by let me know and maybe I can mail you one of each! Happy sipping, Sue from Reynard Florence Vineyard

Thanks for the update on Chester Gap Cellars—I've always enjoyed Bernd's wines and am happy they are more widely available. He combines flavor and finesse in a way that suits my palate, plus I think he's just a smart winemaker. Bernd sold Foggy Ridge Cider our first stainless tanks when we were just getting into the cidermaking biz back in 2005, oh so many bottles ago. Nice post!

Hey, Paul, I know it's out of your usual area, but the Chesterfield Wine Festival, just south of Richmond, is also on that date. I've been two or three times now -- it's on the grounds of the old Chesterfield Courthouse with plenty of parking, lots of trees and shade, and plenty of places to sit if you don't mind doing so on the steps of various buildings. The website is http://www.chesterfieldchamber.com/Celebration_of_the_Vine_Wine_Festival.shtml

If you or anyone else has any questions about it, feel free to send them my way!

You don't need to travel all the way to Annefield (though we'd love to have you), because we are in Northern Virginia during the week and can come to you -- just shoot us an email. And our wine is available in NoVA at the Olde Dominion Wine Shoppe in Occoquan and Twisted Vines Bottleshop & Bistro in Arlington.

If you hail from another part of Virginia, all of the retail shops and restaurants that carry our wine are listed on our blog, Bottled Poetry.

As always, thanks guys!
I am very confused about parents feeling that bringing their under aged children to a winery is acceptable. To me, this should be an adult only activity. I know when I go wine tasting I do not want kids running around, playing soccer or what have you. To me, bringing children to a winery is the same as bringing children to a bar (and yes, I do have children and would NEVER think of bringing them with me when wine tasting.)

Parents need to take others into consideration when out in the public and not feel that whatever their children want to do is acceptable behavior.

In regard to accommodating large groups, you would not go to a restaurant with six couples plus children without a reservation. If you do, then you would expect a long wait or no service.

The bottom line is be courteous and have common sense.

This is a GREAT article! As someone who has been to several VA wineries I wish more people knew what was and wasn't OK behavior when attending a winery. I can't tell you have many people I see get outraged when the winery can't accommodate their large group. More importantly I go there for the wine, not just the buzz (though the buzz can be great sometimes!) and I hate when people can be so rude just because they don't know the proper etiquette when doing a wine tasting.

Thank you. As someone who enjoys wine tastings, I have certainly observed all of the situations you described and felt for the owner and my fellow patrons. I wonder if the vineyard/playground/dogpark situation is a "Virginia thing?" Parents here seem to think all environments are appropriate for their children and pets and there are precious few places left where adults can interact with each other exclusively. I have been to Napa several times and did not observe this kind of thing going on.
